Description

  • 1/4 tsp lemon zest
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon)
  • 5 lb apples (before peeling/coring)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for crumble)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar (for crumble)
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar (for crumble)
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt (for crumble)
  • 3/4 cup melted butter (1 1/2 sticks)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Prepare the pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. In a large bowl, combine lemon zest, lemon juice, and sliced apples.
  4. Add brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and vanilla to the apples. Mix well.
  5. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust.
  6. In another bowl, mix flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and salt for the crumble topping.
  7. Add melted butter to the crumble mixture and mix until crumbly.
  8. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  10. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Let the pie cool before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream for a treat.
