- 1 single homemade pie dough (1 sheet)
- 1/4 tsp lemon zest
- 2 tbsp lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon)
- 5 lb apples (before peeling/coring)
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 3/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cardamom (optional)
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for crumble)
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar (for crumble)
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar (for crumble)
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt (for crumble)
- 3/4 cup melted butter (1 1/2 sticks)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Prepare the pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
- In a large bowl, combine lemon zest, lemon juice, and sliced apples.
- Add brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and vanilla to the apples. Mix well.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust.
- In another bowl, mix flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and salt for the crumble topping.
- Add melted butter to the crumble mixture and mix until crumbly.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
- Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the pie cool before serving.

- Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream for a treat.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
