- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 egg yolks (reserve the whites for meringue)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 3 egg whites
- ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and salt until combined.
- Gradually stir in the milk, then add the egg yolks and vanilla extract.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
- Pour the chocolate filling into the pre-baked pie crust.
- In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add the sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.
- Spread the meringue over the chocolate filling.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the meringue is golden.
Notes
- Ensure the pie crust is completely cooled before adding the filling.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
