Million Dollar Italian Lasagna

Description

Delicious and rich Italian lasagna made with layers of meat, cheese, and pasta.


Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 250 g (½ lb) Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 800 g (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 425 g (15 oz) ricotta cheese
  • ½ cup sour cream or cream cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 9 lasagna noodles (cooked al dente)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup provolone or fontina cheese (optional for extra richness)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted (for brushing top)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and garlic; sauté until soft.
  4. Add ground beef and Italian sausage; cook until browned.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, basil, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, sour cream, egg, Parmesan cheese, and parsley.
  7. Spread a layer of meat sauce in a baking dish.
  8. Place 3 lasagna noodles on top, followed by half of the ricotta mixture and one-third of the mozzarella.
  9. Repeat layers, ending with meat sauce and remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
  10. Brush top with melted butter.
  11. Bake for 30-40 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  12. Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Letting the lasagna sit before cutting helps it hold its shape.
  • Feel free to add vegetables like spinach or mushrooms.
