French Dip Grilled Cheese

Description

A delicious twist on grilled cheese with roast beef and au jus.


Ingredients

  • 8 slices crusty French bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 12 ounces thinly sliced roast beef
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for spreading
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  3. In a separate pot, combine beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Butter one side of each slice of French bread.
  5. Layer Swiss cheese, roast beef, and caramelized onions between two slices of bread, buttered side out.
  6. Grill sandwiches in the skillet until golden brown on both sides and cheese is melted.
  7. Serve sandwiches with au jus for dipping.

Notes

  • Use low-sodium broth for better control of saltiness.
  • Feel free to add more cheese if desired.
  • Adjust the thickness of the roast beef to your liking.
